For many years, the tradition in Episcopal churches has been to have the altar guild oversee not only the preparation of the sanctuary and the nave for worship, but also the procurement and arrangement of flowers for the altar. In cathedrals, however, there is usually a flower guild to shoulder the responsibility for flowering the nave and chapels. But these days, churches like St. George’s have established flower guilds.
The St. George’s vestry recently approved the formation of a flower guild to support the work of our Altar Guild. The mission of St. George’s Flower Guild is to enhance our worship, and to glorify God by presenting gifts of natural beauty.
The volunteers of the Flower Guild procure and arrange flowers for the altar each week. Our work is in partnership with St. Georgians who choose to contribute money for memorials and thanksgivings, with guild members giving their time and talent to create the arrangements. The Guild provides floral arrangements in the church for all Sundays (except during Lent) with extensive decorations in the sanctuary at Christmas and Easter.
Flower Guild volunteers sign up via SignUp Genius to serve every 4-6 weeks. Training in flower arrangement will be offered. Each week, a Guild member purchases fresh flowers either from a local florist, wholesaler or Costco/Trader Joe’s and arrange them for the altar before Sunday morning. Time required each week is typically 1-2 hours. Containers, floral foam and other supplies for the arrangements are supplied by the church.
The Flower Guild has re-introduced floral sponsorship to allow members to dedicate Sunday flowers in celebration or in memory of a person or event. The name(s) of the donor(s) and the occasion will be printed in the service leaflet. The suggested donation for sponsorship is $40. If you wish to make a dedication, there is a sign up sheet for Sundays in 2016, right outside the Parish Administrator’s office
